Like everything in the modern vehicle, rapid progress has been made in the vehicle’s cooling system.

No matter how many technological advances, the principles of the cooling system remain the same – using a flowing liquid to remove heat from the engine and other components by the use of air, through radiators.

Most important to this system is a sealed liquid, flowing through the system, often called coolant.

Unlike its name suggests, aside from transferring heat – which water would be adequate for, coolant’s main job is preventing corrosion in the cooling system. This is why it is recommended to be changed at manufacturer specified intervals.  Further to this, advancements in coolant technology mean that what your father taught you about never mixing different colours of coolant is still valid, but requires further interrogation these days. Almost like soft drink, any chemistry coolant can be made in any colour. What is more important is the correct chemistry of the coolant that is specifically made for your cooling system.

The most common coolant chemistry used these days are IAT, OAT and HOAT – read here.  Using and replacing the correct liquid in your cooling system at the correct intervals, helps avoid the dreaded overheat situation.

The best way to prevent leaks is by replacing coolant at the recommended intervals to prevent corrosion.  The rubber components in the cooling system also have a life span and will inevitably require replacement, even when the coolant is replaced as recommended.
